Overview
Aims of the programme
The aim of the English Philology programme at University of Ostrava is to educate highly qualified experts in English and comparative linguistics and English and American literature, or other Anglophone literatures. The programme also helps to raise the level of staff qualifications at higher education institutions, and provides experienced and qualified teachers with the opportunity to achieve professional career growth and contribute to the further development of the discipline. The PhD programme will be implemented in two specialisations.
The aim of the linguistic-oriented specialisation is to educate highly qualified experts in English and comparative linguistics who are able to work independently to address methodological and practical issues in the field of synchronic and diachronic linguistics. The aim of the literature-oriented specialisation is to educate highly qualified experts in English and American literature (or other literatures in English) who are able to work independently to address methodological and practical issues in the theory and history of these literatures and their reception in a literary and general societal context.
The general aim of the PhD programme is to develop the students capacity for scientific work, critical thinking, and argumentation. The students are systematically encouraged to be able to present and defend the results of their research and discuss them with experts in the respective fields.
