The international Mathematics program from University of Zurich is organized jointly by the Institute of Mathematics (UZH) and the Department of Mathematics (ETHZ). 

About

The essential part of the Mathematics program from University of Zurich is the independent scientific research of the PhD student and the writing of the thesis on his / her research. 

On a regular basis, the PhD student meets with his advisor and at least once a year with his / her doctoral committee to discuss the progress of the dissertation.

Programme Structure

Course Overview:

  • The program includes a curricular part of at least 12 ECTS credits. Each PhD student is free of choosing courses from the course program of the ZGSM. The advisor can also award ECTS credits for a Doctoral Studies Course which includes activities such as articipating at a summer school. Moreover, as part of their doctoral studies, PhD students teach an average of 50 hours per semester, including teaching recitation classes or proctoring exams.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. Academic Requirements

  • Admission to doctoral study is governed by the ordinance on admission to studies at the University of Zurich (Verordnung über die Zulassung an der Universität Zürich VZS). 
  • The main requirement for admission to doctoral study is a Master's degree from a university or an equivalent degree. Each PhD project must receive approval from a professor at the Faculty of Science or from a person who has the right to confer a PhD at the Faculty of Science. There is no general right to be granted admission to a PhD program.
  • All applicants whose native language is not English, or whose prior studies have not been conducted in English, are required to provide proof of sufficient knowledge of English.

Funding

Students with an offer to the graduate program are generally awarded a teaching assistantship, which is renewed after one year for students making satisfactory progress towards their degree. The type of support may sometimes vary.
