Overview
The Biosciences program at Heidelberg University is meant to improve your proficiencies and knowledge in your particular field of study and broaden your scientific horizon beyond the research project you are working on. Participation in a Ph.D. Program is required for all Ph.D. students of the Faculty of Biosciences.

The HBIGS Career Development Service provides all HBIGS students with information and support for career orientation and individual career planning for the next career step after the PhD.
Programme Structure
- According to the rules stipulated by the Faculty of Biosciences of Heidelberg University, PhD students are required to attend a number of scientific and non-scientific training activities during the course of their PhD, embedded in a structured PhD program. The minimum requirement of a PhD student’s total workload in the accompanying training program during the PhD term is 15 Credit Points (CP), according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
- Credit points can e.g. be collected in teaching modules, either offered by HBIGS or other institutions, such as Collaborative Research Centers (CRC), Research Training Groups (RTG), the Graduate Academy or Core Facilities of Heidelberg University.

General requirements
- The requirement for admission to HBIGS is a university degree that will allow the applicant to be accepted as PhD student at Heidelberg University according to the regulations set by the Faculty of Biosciences Qualified PhD applicants are invited to submit applications to HBIGS throughout the whole year, exclusively through the HBIGS online application system
- All candidates who wish to become a member of HBIGS have to submit their application prior (!) to the start of their PhD project. Students who have already started their PhD project are not eligible to apply (The starting date of your PhD term is usually identical to the starting date of your contract).
