Overview

The main research areas concern social inclusion and accessibility to products and services, digital communication and interaction, technological, energy and material culture, the built environment and cultural heritage enhancement, and sustainable production systems in industry and crafts. Advanced methodologies and a collaborative approach between different fields of knowledge support these research activities.

There are many collaborations with the strategic industrial and housing, cultural and social sectors present in the area, as well as connections with universities and research centres at national and international levels. From the point of view of transdisciplinary training, doctoral students are followed in the research path by two tutors from different disciplines, just as the teaching of the courses offered by the PhD is interdisciplinary.

Career Opportunities

The PhD programme in Design and Technologies. People, Systems and Environment from Politecnico di Torino  trains figures capable of operating, in a complementary way between research and design, for innovation in the academy, research centres, public, private and third-sector entities or companies, including start-ups and spin-offs.

Research Doctors can design, develop and manage systems, processes, services, manufacturing and communication products, capable of intervening in the dynamics of innovation in fruition, with a particular sensitivity towards the ecological and digital transition, social innovation and the humanization of technologies, as well as to develop actions for the construction of research networks.

Programme Structure

  • Every two years, the Academic Board identifies an "emerging theme" referring to contemporary challenges to which the research of the current Doctorate will refer through theoretical insights and experimental declinations.
  • Every year there is a kick-off and exploration seminar on the "emerging theme" open to all PhD students and teachers, with the participation of excellent guests.
