Gastroenterology is the study of disorders of the digestive system. Gastrointestinal and liver diseases are common, and have a major impact on health and wellbeing across the life course.
About the programme
Gastroenterology research at The University of Manchester extends from understanding basic gut physiology and the mechanisms of disease, through to investigation and treatment.
Our work spans the spectrum from cellular and molecular studies, animal models of disease and whole human physiology to clinical studies and trials, and health service research.

- We require applicants to hold, or be about to obtain, an Upper Second class Honours degree, or the equivalent qualification gained outside the UK, in a related subject area for entry to a PhD programme.
- A Lower Second class Honours degree may be considered if applicants also hold a Master's degree with a Merit classification.
