Overview
The goal of the Ph.D. Program in Materials Science and Engineering at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid is to provide students with a technological and research training that enables them to develop their competencies in Universities, research departments of public or private enterprises or technological centers.
Aims
Students will achieve a systematic understanding of some aspects of Materials Science and Engineering and a mastery of research skills and methods associated with that field of knowledge, e.g.:
- The ability to conceive, design, implement and adopt a substantial research process with scholarly integrity
- The ability to complete an original scientific or technological contribution, which stems from their research and expands the frontiers of knowledge in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. Ph.D. students are required to have made a scientific or technological contribution in a journal that is contained in the ISI, in order to be allowed to defend their Ph.D. thesis
- The ability to carry out a critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas
- The ability to communicate with peers, the academic community as a whole and with society at large about their areas of expertise
Programme Structure
Research areas include:
- Construction materials, corrosion and durability. Development of new materials for concrete and corrosion control
- Surface treatments and adhesion: adhesives and paints
- Electrochemical characterization of materials
- Composite and multifunctional materials: processing; properties; interphases; multifunctional composites; nanocomposites and polymer blends (thermoplastics and thermosets)
- Materials with electrical, magnetic, optical or thermal functionality. Manufacture of functional materials, study of the relationship between structure (at any length scale) and properties
- Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology. Synthesis and properties of new nanostructured and functional materials and their transformation processes applied to different industrial and scientific fields
