About the programme

The Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria continues to develop into one of the largest and most diverse units in South Africa for the initial and advanced training of education professionals from across the world.

A distinguishing characteristic of the Faculty is that it not only trains pre-service teachers but also educational psychologists, principals, researchers, programme evaluators, curriculum designers, computer education and training experts, assessment specialists, education policy analysts, community development workers and education law advisors working in national and international agencies and organisations. This Educational Psychology programme is offered at the University of Pretoria.

Programme Structure

Structure:

  • A doctoral study is assessed on the basis of a doctoral thesis in the traditional format or in the form of a collection of published works, creative works and/or other scholarly contributions (articles and essays etc.).
  • Oral defense: The faculty regulations may determine that an oral defense should form part of the academic requirements for the qualification.
  • A professional doctorate is assessed on the outcome of the research component as well as the required coursework modules in accordance with the approved faculty regulations.

  • Relevant MEd (or equivalent) degree
  • A weighted average of at least 60% for the research component of the relevant master’s degree
Selection is done after the closing date, based on the following:
  • Candidates who achieved a cumulative weighted average of at least 60% in the relevant master's degree will receive preference
  • Relevant academic/work experience
  • Interviews with the HoD and programme coordinator to clarify aspects of the application, research concept note or the research interests
  • The availability of supervision capacity for the research projects in the department
