About the programme
The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University also teaches students belonging to different educational programs and separate courses in cell biology, physiology, neurobiology, anatomy and histology.
The research at the Department of Medical Cell Biology is linked to several clinical problems, and one of the major aims of the Department is to perform innovative translational research leading to new advances within modern diagnostics and therapy.
Programme Structure

- Mechanisms of regulated exocytosis
- Mechanisms of lipotoxicity in beta cells
- Beta cell therapy and regenerative medicine
- Immune regulation in type 1 diabetes
- The destruction and proliferation of beta cells
- Hepatocellular cancer
- Translational studies of organ failure during intensive care
- Cell signaling, mechanobiology and cell analysis tools
- The mechanisms of long-term memory, functions of gene families, and the properties of G-protein-coupled receptors
- Coding for visual information in the nervous system

A person meets the general entry requirements for PhD Programmes if he or she:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification;
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle; or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
