Overview

All postgraduate Creative Writing research students at University of Bristol are supervised by two academics, one of whom will normally be a creative writing academic and the other from English Literature or a related discipline relevant to the creative and critical work.

As with the traditional research degrees, the final submission will be expected to make ‘a substantial and original contribution to knowledge’.

For Creative Writing, this means a body of work that contributes in individual, significant and demonstrable ways to current discourses in literature.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

PhD: a research project undertaken across four years (full-time, minimum period of study three years), culminating in an 80,000-word thesis/project (normally 50,000 words of creative work – often an extract from a longer project – and 30,000 words of a critical investigation).

As well as having the option to audit taught units where appropriate, there may be the potential for PhD students to teach units themselves from their second year of study onwards.

Applicants without a master's qualification may be considered on an exceptional basis, provided they hold a first-class undergraduate degree (or international equivalent).

Applicants with a non-traditional background may be considered provided they can demonstrate substantial equivalent and relevant experience that has prepared them to undertake their proposed course of study.

Acceptance will also depend on previous study or achievement in Creative Writing.
