Overview

Specific requirements of the PhD Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences programme at Leiden University depend on the specialisation chosen and are determined in agreement with the supervisor of the thesis.

The PhD candidates actively participate in national and international meetings as a part of their training.

The ULLA consortium organizes biannually a summer school in one of the five participating institutes. The PhD thesis is written in English, the language commonly used in the research groups.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

Every PhD candidate draws up an Education and Supervision Plan (ESP/OBP) with the supervisor and promotor that outlines research and education targets, supervision and training.

You can find a template for the ESP in the menu on the right. Some insitutes, however, use a modified version of this template, so please make sure you use the template relevant for your institute. The PhD candidate meets with the supervisor on a regular basis, discussing research, training and teaching. Your development is officially evaluated annually during a ‘Result and Development assessment’.

General requirements

Thank you for your interest in doing PhD research at the Leiden Graduate School of Science. The Graduate School of Science offers 9 PhD Programmes, spanning the entire spectrum of science. If you have a Master's degree, are proficient in English, and share a fascination with science, it may be possible to pursue a PhD degree at the Leiden Graduate School of Science.

Contract PhDs receive a grant in their country of origin, which enables them to conduct PhD research at our University. The Graduate School of Science does not provide PhD grants.

External PhD candidates receive their funding from other sources than Leiden University or PhD grants. External PhD candidates are not allowed to teach in the regular curriculum. I
