Overview
The Historical and Systematic Theology programme at Charles University covers a wide range of themes related to the history of Christian churches, thought, cultures, and piety from the patristic period to contemporary times, alongside systematic reflection on theological concepts within the framework of Christian faith. It provides two main study focuses, allowing candidates to engage with diverse topics while encouraging both historical understanding and conceptual analysis.
Key Facts
A core principle of the programme is the integration of historical and theological perspectives. Students are expected to develop familiarity with theological terminology when studying historical topics and, conversely, to ground systematic-theological reflection in historically documented traditions and critical methodologies.
The programme supports flexibility in topic selection, accommodating different academic backgrounds while maintaining this balance.
Admission is open to graduates in theology and related humanities disciplines, provided they have experience in critical analysis and interpretation of written sources in original languages and demonstrate readiness to deepen these skills. Prospective candidates must first consult with the programme guarantor to discuss their research project and ensure the availability of a suitable supervisor.Programme Structure
