Overview
Research topic description: Research on emergency water treatment in the context of natural and anthropogenic disasters concentrates on the development and deployment of rapid, decentralized, and resilient technologies capable of producing safe water under conditions of infrastructure collapse. When centralized treatment and distribution systems fail, alternative solutions must be able to operate autonomously, tolerate highly variable raw water quality, and ensure effective removal of physical, microbiological, and chemical contaminants. Contemporary studies consistently highlight the importance of multi-barrier treatment concepts integrated into portable or modular units, combining physical separation processes (e.g., mobile ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO)) with rapid chemical disinfection and, where necessary, adsorption or advanced oxidation steps. Elevated concentrations of natural organic matter further complicate treatment by increasing disinfectant demand and the potential formation of disinfection by-products. In flooded or industrially impacted areas, additional risks arise from the release of hazardous chemicals, requiring treatment systems to be sufficiently robust and flexible to address both acute microbial threats and diverse chemical pollution.
