The educational programs of the Doctoral School of Linguistics from University of Szeged provide students with theoretical and methodological knowledge necessary for doing research into the theoretical, historical, typological and applied aspects of linguistics as well as writing scholarly papers and a PhD dissertation.

About

  • In the Doctoral School of Linguistics programs from University of Szeged basic theoretical subfields of linguistics are introduced such as phonology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics and/or applied sciences in language teaching, research methods, writing papers and a PhD dissertation. 
  • Rigorous coursework includes learning about theoretical issues and research directions, and it develops critical thinking, and various abilities of analyzing and processing information.
  • There is also a focus on developing skills to identify and solve scholarly problems, carry out research, and prepare publications. Graduates usually choose their careers in academic disciplines, teaching and translation.

Programme Structure

The programs of the doctoral school are the following (applicants have to apply to a specific program):

  • Altaic Studies – in English,
  • English Applied Linguistics – in English, 
  • French Linguistics – in French, 
  • German Linguistics – in German, 
  • Russian Linguistics – in Russian, 
  • Slavic Historical Studies – in English, and
  • Theoretical Linguistics – in English.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level.     The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.   • Minimum required score (Grade B2):

    C1 Advanced is a Cambridge English Qualification. It reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 142 and 210. You will receive a separate score for each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and for Use of English. These five scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam. Universities and colleges may ask you to achieve a specific score, either overall or for a particular skill.

    Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.
