  • 36 months
University rank #314 (QS) Barcelona, Spain
The Doctoral Programme incorporates into a common structure to main areas, widely accepted internationally: Geotechnical Engineering and Subsurface Hydrology (or Hydrogeology). The profile of the proposed course for each one of the 'specialties' defined is similar others proposed in well known 'University Departments' worldwide.

The PhD on Geotechnical Engineering (which in the case of the UPC PhD Program includes Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics, Hydrology and Applied Geology) constitutes a classical and internationally very active program within the Civil Engineering framework. Researching in the fields above mentioned is reflected in 15 to 20 prestigious international reviews and in many national reviews, as well as congress proceedings of all kinds.

The unique nature of the Programme provides an additional advantage to the specialties defined specially at a conceptual levels (some common topics are identified: flow in porous medic; transport; thermal, mechanical hydraulic and chemical interactions). It is underlined that this conceptual level is one of the main issues in developed a Doctorate Programme.

The research interests of the staff involved have marked traditionally the Doctoral dissertations developed within the Programme. The group of professors participating are well known Internationally because of their contributions to the developments of theoretical and numerical models in a variety of topics (flow in random media, contaminants transport, optimizations techniques, constitutive equations of geomaterials, advanced numerical Programmes) and for their involvement in International and European Projects in the past twenty years. The projects awarded are a permanent source of research topics for the students participating in the Programme.

The objective of the programme is to provide high-quality research training in the field of soil and rock mechanics, hydrogeology and geological engineering. In addition, the activities included in the programme (courses, research work, seminars) will provide up-to-date information on current thinking and technological developments.
