Overview
Competences (learning outcomes) acquired as a result of studying at the Telematics and Logistics doctoral programme from Transport and Telecommunication Institute :
- perform the independent critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation, be able to solve significant research or innovation tasks in Engineering and interdisciplinary fields;
- be able to propose independently a research idea, plan, structure and manage large-scale scientific projects in Engineering and interdisciplinary fields, including the international ones;
- be able to demonstrate comprehension and understanding of the most up-to-date Engineering theories and scientific knowledge, and be proficient in modern research methods and methodologies appropriate to the sciences;
- be able to analyse the results independently and draw appropriate conclusions from them;
- be able to plan the research independently, to manage the research or development tasks in organisations where extensive research knowledge and skills are required;
- be able to evaluate analytically and critically the research material, integrate theoretical knowledge into the research process, reveal the problems, generate and develop new ideas;
- be able to improve independently the own scientific qualifications;
- be able to communicate independently in writing, demonstrating comprehension of the existing knowledge and its application in practice, including the preparation and publication of internationally cited scientific articles and publications
The degree of Doctor of Science is awarded for an independently developed and publicly defended doctoral thesis of great theoretical significance and a perspective of practical application, containing original results of scientific research and providing new insights in the sub-field of telematics and logistics.
Doctoral students have the opportunity:
- to choose one of the doctoral research topics, thus becoming involved in TTI research projects and gaining the opportunity to learn scientific work competencies under the guidance of the TTI researchers;
- to propose your research topic, taking into account the research interests and the challenges and tasks of the current career, which is an industrial approach to doctoral study;
- to carry out research under the guidance of experienced scientific supervisors and faculty members who are experts with experience in large international projects;
- to use a modern research support environment – state-of-the-art laboratories, e-library, research advisors.

General requirements
- Applicants must have a master’s degree or higher education, equated to a master’s degree
- Applicant must pass the entrance exam for the doctoral study programme
- In addition, a copy of the Master thesis and an essay on the research topic of the planned doctoral thesis must be submitted
- For studies in English, you must present a test score of at least B2 level from an internationally recognized testing institution, or take the TSI entrance exam in English, except for cases where the previous education was obtained in English.
- If the applicant’s previous education was completed abroad, he/she must submit a statement from the Latvian Academic Information Centre (www.aic.lv) stating which academic degree or diploma awarded in Latvia corresponds to the educational document obtained abroad
