In 1803, Ohio became a state and on February 18, 1804, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act establishing "The Ohio University." The University opened in 1808 with one building, three students, and one professor, Jacob Lindley. One of the first two graduates of the University, Thomas Ewing, later became a US senator and distinguished himself as cabinet member or advisor to four presidents.

Providing access to "the nation's best transformative learning community" for students throughout southeastern Ohio and beyond, that's the regional campus mission. Five campuses and two satellite centers help meet that mission.
Student organizations are an integral part of the OHIO community and offer students rich, interdisciplinary opportunities to learn outside of the classroom. The Campus Involvement Center strives to provide a structure and guidance for students to join together for a common purpose. Individually, student organizations provide a platform for students to develop leadership and organizational skills. Collectively, student organizations enrich campus life by enhancing the cultural, social, and intellectual life of the University.
