History

In 1989, the leaders of Hong Kong saw a need to build a new, research-focused university to support the city’s future ambitions—to become not just the financial hub of Asia, but also a center of knowledge advancement, economic growth and influence in the Pearl River Delta Region, leveraging Hong Kong’s unique status with China who just recently opened to reforms.

Student services

The Dean of Students' Office are here to help you get the best out of your university education—making your time here at HKUST dear to your heart, significant to your growth and transforming to your life.

Housing services

The on-campus residential halls provide a total of:

  • 4,544 places for undergraduate students in UG Halls
  • 1,552 places in single or double rooms for Research Postgraduate Students

The University has also rented 9 apartments in Tai Po Tsai to provide accommodation for full-time postgraduate students, on taught programs offered by SENG. Please consult your SENG program office for details.

Library services

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the University must use their university or library cards for entry. Access to the Learning Commons after the Library closes is restricted to current HKUST students and staff only, using their own university cards.

ICT services

ITSC provides Wi-Fi services both on-campus and off-campus with the assurance of good performance, reliability and high availability.

Medical services

The University provides medical and dental services to students. Full-time students can use the Medical Clinic and the Student Dental Clinic upon presenting their student ID cards. These clinics are managed by the Health, Safety, Environment Office (HSEO).

Student Life

Campus life

From housing to dining and all the socializing that goes on in between, get to know your life and surroundings, facilities and resources for the time outside of the classroom.

Most of the facilities are available for booking by individual students on a first-come-first-served basis through the Facilities Booking System (FBS). For advance booking by student societies, please complete and submit the relevant application form and activity proposal to LG3 Amenities Service Counter.

Sports facilities

  • The University provides a variety of sports and recreation facilities for the enhancement and promotion of your total well-being. All Full-time and Part-time students, staff and family members, long-serving retirees / leavers and Sports Facilities User Card holders are welcome to use the facilities.  
  • The demand of sports facilities is quite keen. Sports skill classes, sports team practices and organized sports events including the intervarsity and intramural sports competitions are held in various facilities throughout the year.

Student clubs

The Students' Union is an unincorporated association formed by HKUST students who choose to register as its members.  

SU is entirely separate and independent from the University, its position, views or actions therefore do not represent that of the University. All undergraduate and postgraduate students shall be eligible for Full Membership. All members of the University, other than students eligible for Full Membership, shall be eligible for Associate Membership.
