The National University of Singapore started out as a modest medical school with 23 students in 1905, founded by a determined group of businessmen led by Tan Jiak Kim, to serve the needs of the local community. Today, more than 100 years on, as Singapore’s flagship university, we continue to be in service of country and society. Learn more about our rich heritage and leaders of this institution.
Infinite possibilities. We offer a global and Asian experience that is broad, deep and rigorous. An NUS education is recognised as among the best in Asia, and the world. Your enrolment at NUS is valid 20 years from the point of undergraduate admission. Alumni are automatically eligible for lifelong learning courses. At NUS, we push boundaries to achieve research excellence through multiple disciplines. We have adopted an integrated approach that brings together researchers from diverse fields. Through the combined strength of our faculties, schools, research institutes and centres, we have built eight integrative research clusters. These are ageing, Asian studies, biomedical science and translational medicine, finance and risk management, integrative sustainability solutions, maritime, materials science and smart nation.
NUS-ISS Career Services Unit supports our students, alumni and all executive programmes participants seeking career-course advisory and job placement support. Our career consultants are always ready to help students to understand their career aspirational and developmental needs; and to help in their placement to suitable job opportunities.
The Office of Student Affairs seizes every opportunity and dedicates itself to provide and support the NUS student community in all aspects of student life outside of the classroom, including student services, housing admission and residential life, student organisations, student leaders’ training, community engagement, integration and service learning, student support and wellness, as well as disability support.
NUS offers a variety of accommodation options to suit the needs and aspirations of full-time NUS students. Residential living is an essential part of a holistic university education. It offers a life-time opportunity for students to live amongst peers from different countries, social and cultural backgrounds, and academic disciplines. It provides ample opportunities for one to step out, engage, and open one’s mind to others. It also enables students to hone their leadership skills, people skills, and forge lasting friendships with one another.
The Central Library is the largest and flagship library of NUS Libraries. Each year, it records more than a million visits.
Located at the heart of NUS, Central Library stands out as one of the old charms of the University. Many NUS alumni have wonderful memories of the Central Library, referring to it fondly as CLB.
A student’s experience isn’t only determined by the quality of the academic learning and interaction with faculty members. Amenities and services ranging from food courts, bookshops, pharmacy and many more essential facilities are located around campus, making life on campus convenient for students, residents and guests. NUS is also well connected by public transport via trains and buses.
National University of Singapore Students’ Union (NUSSU) is a unique student-run institution that is autonomous from the University Administration primarily in terms of operations and budget. Perspectives and opinions about any issue vary, as such, to facilitate communication between the Union and the administration, Student leaders from various faculty clubs and non-faculty clubs volunteer to come together as the NUSSU Council to address the concerns of their fellow undergraduate union members. The NUSSU Council is spearheaded by the NUSSU Executive Committee (NUSSU EXCO).
