About

History

In the early 19th century, George Ramsay, the ninth Earl of Dalhousie and Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor at the time, wanted to establish a Halifax college open to all, regardless of class or creed.

The spoils of war helped fulfill his dream. During the War of 1812, Castine, a small port in Maine, was being used as a base by American privateers who harassed ships along the Eastern Seaboard.

Education

Dalhousie combines the prestige of a big-name university with a hands-on, collaborative education — all students have access to experiential learning opportunities in their programs and nearly 90% are taking advantage of it.

Research

Our membership in the U15 distinguishes us as one of Canada’s leading research-intensive universities, attracting more than $150 million in research grants and awards each year. Many of our researchers are nationally and internationally recognized for their work, whether it’s groundbreaking, thought-provoking or solving real-world issues.

Career

The Career Information Centre exists to help students move forward in their educational and career planning.

Services

Student services

The most noteworthy change is the creation of a new vice-provost, student affairs position that replaces the vice-president student services. In an email to all students, Dr. Watters explained the rationale for realigning Dal’s student service functions within the Provost’s Office, citing the cross-function nature of Dal’s priorities within its new Strategic Direction (specifically, helping more students succeed in their studies and complete their degrees).

Housing services

The Student Accessibility Centre (Halifax Campus) and the Student Success Centre (Agricultural Campus) are Dalhousie’s centres of expertise on student access, inclusion, and accommodation support. We work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to create an inclusive educational environment for students.

Library services

With five libraries, two learning commons, archival collections, a Geographical Information Sciences (GIS) Centre, and a Copyright Office, the libraries provide timely, context-sensitive service in person or online. Our University Librarian is Donna Bourne-Tyson.

Medical services

Dalhousie provides health & wellness support to Dalhousie and King's students through an interprofessional collaborative model and stepped care approach to wellness. With a professional and peer support network, students have access to services and support, workshops, online resources, and more.
