About

History

Our mission dates to 1847 when founder Townsend Harris, an early champion of public education and a pioneering diplomat who was the first U.S. ambassador to Japan, called upon New York City to create a public academy of higher learning to “educate the whole people.”

Education

The University is an integrated system of senior and community colleges, graduate and professional schools, research centers, institutes and consortia. From certificate courses to Ph.D. programs, CUNY offers postsecondary learning to students of all backgrounds. It provides the city with graduates trained for high-demand positions in the sciences, technology, mathematics, teaching, nursing and other fields.

Research

The mission of the CUNY Office of Research is to promote and support the research, scholarly, and creative pursuits of the CUNY community, to provide assurance to funding agencies and to the public that research at the University is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards, and to enhance technology commercialization, entrepreneurship, and economic development activities.

ICT services

CUNY's Open Access Policy applies to Internet access. Every member of the CUNY community with a valid CUNY ID has full rights to Internet use in all CUNY libraries.

Individual campuses may determine local rules governing specific terms of Internet use. Such rules include time limits, signing-up, number of users per terminal, downloading and printing.

Medical services

The NYSED/CUNY CareerKit project is a comprehensive career preparation resource for teachers and counselors in New York State. Its goal is to equip students with the skills necessary to make informed choices about their career paths. The NYSED/CUNY CareerKit activities are written at the HSE/Upper ESL level, with adaptations possible for Pre-HSE and intermediate ESL levels.

Student Life

Campus life

The University spans 25 campuses across the city’s five boroughs providing exceptional access for high school graduates, high academic quality, numerous programs to support student completion and deep connections with important industries for career success

Sports facilities

The City University of New York Athletic Conference provides all students with the opportunity to participate in a competitive athletic environment and supportive learning atmosphere, wherein life skills such as leadership development, sportsmanship, healthy living, and community service are of vital importance.

Student clubs

There are over 1400 student clubs and organizations (and counting!) among our 24 campuses.

Student engagement has been an integral and vital component of student success. It is well-documented that students who are involved in their campus community excel academically.

Student engagement is more important than ever as employers and graduate schools value the skills and competencies learned from participating in co-curricular activities. In addition, students use the knowledge and experience they gain to improve their local communities.

Accreditation

CUNY colleges, as well as the Graduate School and University Center, receive their institutional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE or Middle States). MSCHE examines each institution as a whole, rather than specific programs within institutions.
