History
The university was formerly known as the South China Institute of Technology, which was first founded in 1952 by merging the engineering schools and departments of several major universities and polytechnic institutes from five provinces, including Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi.
Education
It is a public research-intensive university directly governed by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Located in the city of Guangzhou, a thriving metropolis in South China, the university today covers a total area of 391 hectares, consisting of three campuses: the Wushan Campus, the University Town Campus, and the Guangzhou International Campus.
Research
South China University of Technology (SCUT) is a key and comprehensive research-oriented university under “Project 985” and “Project 211”. It bears outstanding scientific research capacity with 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 foreign academician of Russian Academy of Engineering, 22 Chang Jiang Scholars and 30 receivers of the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. It has 2,147 graduate instructors, including 749 doctoral supervisors.

Library services
The library of South China University of Technology was established in 1952, with the Foreign Textbooks Centre directly under the State Ministry of Education and the Novelty Search Workstation at the ministerial level authorized by the State Ministry of Education, is among one of the largest libraries of the key polytechnic universities.
