History
The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as such was created in the 1989-1990 academic year, as a result of a major movement in society in Gran Canaria, which culminated when the Canary Islands Parliament passed the University Reorganisation Law on April 26th, 1989. The ULPGC is, thus, a modern institution with a long academic track record, committed to quality, efficiency and modernity.
Education
The ULPGC offers a wide range of degrees in all the major fields of knowledge. ULPGC students receive support for on-site classes through the e-training platform and may also take specific harmonization courses for the most difficult subjects in the first year of the degree course.
Research
The ULPGC has university institutes, research centres and research groups covering all fields of knowledge, made up of nearly 1000 researchers and around 1000 PhD students. It also has a Scientific and Technological Park. The ULPGC's leading research fields include computer, telecommunications and electronic technology; medical science and technology; economics; marine science; development cooperation; renewable energies; environmental conservation and tourism.
Career
We work to support final year students with a view to entering the job market. For this, Employment Forums and different activities and courses are organized so that students can face the passage to the world of work with the best guarantees of success.

ARWU World University rankings is the first world university ranking. It ranks the world's top 1000 colleges and universities based on objective indicator. They look at the number of award-winning (Fields Medals and Nobel Prize) scientists who are located there, how much of their research is cited and referenced around the world, and how much they've contributed to different academic fields. After calculating and comparing these criteria, ARWU ranks the universities accordingly.
Student services
The objective of the Social Action Service is to get closer to the reality and environment closest to the student, through the study of their social and personal situations.For this purpose, it manages various care programs at the service of the interested parties, favoring the necessary conditions for full inclusion, offering information, training and guidance, and enhancing some intellectual, academic or personal resources to improve their academic performance.
Housing services
The University Residences of the ULPGC are just one of the institution’s services. They are currently run by the University Accommodation Service (SAU, in Spanish). There are two residences for the University Community, one apartment complex and four bungalows; three of these centres are located on the Tafira Campus and the other one is in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The two residences and the apartments have rooms which have been adapted for the disabled.
Library services
The General Library and the central library services are located in the Central Building of the University Library on the Tafira campus. This building has a surface area of 6000 m² distributed over 6 floors, 4 of which are open to the public.
ICT services
It has modern facilities and equipment, with Wi-Fi area in all its centres. Some of the reading rooms at the University Library are open 24 hours a day, and the students can also consult sources at the library, take books out on loan, make photocopies, access teledocumentation and request the purchase of material. Laptops are also available.
Campus life
The ULPGC has six Campuses , three of which are located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; one in the municipality of Arucas (Gran Canaria) and another two in the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura .
Sports facilities
The ULPGC’s sports service manages a number of different indoor and outdoor facilities for the following sports, among others: handball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor football, athletics, rugby, football, squash, weightlifting, wrestling, sports gymnastics and aerobics. It also offers a programme of outdoor activities such as rambling, orienteering, canoeing, multi-adventure, mountain-bike, diving, parachuting, hang-gliding and bungee jumping.
Student clubs
The ULPGC offers the university community a wide range of cultural and sports activities to complement academic learning, that promotes values of solidarity, social justices, gender equality and respect for biodiversity and the environment. To this end, the ULPGC has Cultural Centres offering a varied programme of films, plays, jazz, humour, conferences, courses and working sessions. Students may attend many of these activities for free. They can also participate in voluntary work with NGOs or environmental groups on the University Campus.
