History

Founded in 1432 by the King of England Henry VI, the University of Caen was destroyed in 1944 during the Battle of Normandy. It was among the first buildings to be rebuilt during the city reconstruction after World War II. Redesigned with a futuristic vision, it became one of the most modern universities in Europe. In 2012, part of its buildings were thus classified as historical monuments.

Housing services

It is important that you anticipate your stay in advance and not wait to be in France to look for housing. Caen is a busy University town with many students (about 25% of its global population!), and it can be quite challenging to find suitable housing at the last minute.

The CROUS Caen Normandie, partner of the University of Caen Normandy, offers different student housing options on our different campuses (single rooms, studios, T1...). It is not necessary to wait for your UNICAEN confirmation to apply for CROUS housing. You have the possibility to make 2 housing choices in 3 different areas (académies) in France.

Library services

  • UNICAEN has a network of 5 university libraries and 20 specialised faculty libraries.
  • The library portal provides unique access to all university library resources, in both printed or digital forms: books, articles, journals.
  • The digital resources offered by the libraries (online journals, databases, e-books, etc.) are also remotely accessible, i.e. off campus.

ICT services

  • free WiFi network: many WiFi hotspots are installed on the various campuses allowing you to connect to the Internet from your personal equipment
  • UNICAEN secure cloud: access to all your files via the Internet
  • self-service computer rooms: workstations allow you to connect to the Internet for office automation, PDF readers, image editing etc.; multifunction copiers are also available

Medical services

The university health center provides students with medical, psychological and social care for free. There you can meet doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers. It also contributes to the support and integration of students with disabilities. SUMPPS doctors cannot prescribe medication but they can refer you to a medical office in the city.

Campus life

UNICAEN is an academic community of campuses in and around Caen. Our six distinct campuses offer an array of diverse learning environments:

  • Alençon - Damigny
  • Caen
  • Cherbourg-en-Cotentin
  • Lisieux
  • Saint-Lô
  • Vire

At UNICAEN, treat yourself to all of the Normandy region’s advantages such as the coastline, proximity to the United Kingdom, a fast and easy access to Paris and cultural & attractive sporting activities. The Region also has a strong cultural tradition that is illustrated both by major international events and by the diversity of its heritage.

Sports facilities

The University Service of Physical and Sports Activities - SUAPS offers all UNICAEN students and staff the opportunity to practice sports on a weekly basis. With nearly 70 sports activities, the SUAPS offers a wide range of physical activities as well as sports equipment: climbing wall, fitness room, swimming pools, gymnasium, dance hall, tennis and outdoor racket and ball games...

The SUAPS also organises courses (skiing, diving, climbing, paragliding, golf, outdoor physical activities...) and events (Nuits des Sports Co, Nuit de la Raquette, Volleyball-fluo, Journée Sport Campus, Soirée Forme...) throughout the year.

The university was established in 1432. It is accredited by Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche, France.
