History
Jianghan University was established as a technical college by Wuhan's city government in 1981, but set up its four-year undergraduate programme almost a decade later. It merged with the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Hankou branch) and Wuhan Worker's Medical College in 2001.
Education
The university offers 51 degree programs covering a wide range of areas of study including economy, law, liberal arts and history, education, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and management.
Research
The university has 20 scientific research institutes, including the Institute of Development, and the Institute of Higher Education Research. It is now undertaking or has completed a large number of scientific research programs (projects), among which many have reached international or state advanced levels, many won state, ministerial or provincial awards.

The university has 16127 sets of teaching instruments and research equipment, the total value of which approximates RMB ¥123 million. Its library possesses a book collection of 1.72 million volumes and 650,000 kinds of electronic materials.

With the major site in Hanyang and 2 branch campuses in Hankou and Wuchang , the university now occupies a total area of 140.96 million square meters and a floorage of 54 million square meters.
