University of Madeira

The University of Madeira is a Portuguese public university, created in 1988 in Funchal. The university offers first and second cycle academic degrees in a wide range of fields, in accordance with the Bologna process. It is now under the CMU/Portugal agreement with Carnegie Mellon University, having master programme in Computer Engineering, Human Computer Interaction and Entertainment Technology.

Before University of Madeira initiated its services, there were other higher education institutions during the 20th Century: The University institute of Madeira (“Instituto Universitário da Madeira”), the Superior institute of Plastic Arts of Madeira (“Instituto Superior de Artes Plásticas da Madeira”) and the Music Conservatory of Madeira (“Conservatório de Música da Madeira”).


The University pursues scientific research activities, promoting the diffusion and social and economic valorization of knowledge and technological innovation. It guarantees the human education at the highest level, in its cultural, scientific, artistic, technical and professional aspects, conducting academic studies to obtain a degree, a Technical Course and other courses. It seeks to prepare its students for the challenges of global society and lifelong learning by providing them with scientific knowledge, technical competence and transversal training.

Student services

To support the student in his relationship with the University in the context of his pedagogical activity, being responsible for receiving complaints from the students, informing the student about his rights and directing him to the appropriate structure to solve his problems, promoting the full integration of students with special educational needs at the University, aiming at equal opportunities, among other responsibilities.

Library services

It exercises its competences in the areas of support for the information and knowledge-building activities developed at the University, granting access to all the bibliographic resources essential for the promotion of research, teaching, learning, lifelong education and support for cultural activities.

Campus life

Students who wish to explore Funchal will find a modern city of about 100,000 inhabitants. Its harbor and climate, combined with an attractive geographical position, have allowed Funchal to have a rapid population growth.

The university’s campus dates back to a 16th century Jesuit college.
