The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSV UK) is a part of one of the oldest universities in the world which was founded in 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. Shortly after the establishment in 1990, FSV UK became a regional centre of teaching and research in economics, sociology, political science, international relations, area studies, media studies and journalism.

Studies at FSV UK are intended primarily to prepare students for a professional career in the private sector, public administration, national governments, European institutions, academic research or the media.

FSV UK fully supports the socio-scientific research. The Faculty integrates and co-ordinates the research plan it has acquired with several departments of  the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. 

Within this framework, FSV UK has made a commitment to provide the professional public with a critical and scientifically-based reflection on the development of Czech society from a long-term perspective. 

Within this research project and a number of Czech and European grants, the members of individual institutes and faculties develop the theory, methodology and empirical research in all major areas of social sciences.
