The ICR was founded in 1909 as The Cancer Hospital Research Institute, a small research laboratory within what would become The Royal Marsden in Chelsea. It was officially opened by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, in 1911 during his visit to award The Royal Marsden its Royal Charter.

As members of the University of London, full time students at The Institute of Cancer Research may apply to join a waiting list for a place in intercollegiate halls.
Although the ICR does not have any student accommodation of its own, there are some great services available to its students looking for a place to live.
These include the University of London Housing Services, which provides advice to students seeking private accommodation; and Goodenough College, a private postgraduate hall of residence in Russell Square, London.
The library and information service supports the academic and clinical work of The Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
The library on the Sutton site is open to visitors, and borrowing rights are granted to visitors from academic institutions that are a member of the SCONUL Access Scheme.
Wireless Internet access is available to guests of a member of staff at the ICR for business needs related to the HEI sector. The host at ICR will be able to provide the correct username and password for each visitor.
Most people are covered for emergency healthcare and dental care through the National Health Service (NHS), but you will still need to register with a local doctor and dentist.
NHS dentists provide dental care at a low fixed cost. You can register with an NHS dentist or you can choose to use a private dentist at a higher cost.
Both sites contain meeting rooms of various sizes, lecture theatres for internal and external seminars, and PhD study rooms, which can be booked by students for quiet study. In addition, both sites have a staff restaurant, serving hot and cold food and drink throughout the day.
The Sutton site also houses some excellent recreational facilities including: a gym which is free to all staff; an extensive research library; and a sports and social club which has an indoor swimming pool, bar, squash court and a large sports hall. Membership of the club is free to all staff (there is a small charge for some activities and the pool).
Student committee representatives attend various institute-wide committees, from the Board of Trustees (the equivalent of a university council) through to the Academic Board (which has both taught course and research degree student members) and committees such as the fundraising committee and The Institute of Cancer Research social committees.
As a college of the University of London, the ICR receives funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). To safeguard our position and provide for the sustainable expansion, the University aim to continually increase and diversify our sources of income.
