The first 25 students were admitted in September 1845 and the following year student numbers increased to 108. Many of those early students went on to careers in Colonial Agricultural Administrations and the Diplomatic and Foreign Service.
The University motto is 'Arvorum Cultus Pecorumque'; a quote from Virgil's Georgics, it means 'Caring for the Fields and the Beasts'. What more appropriate maxim could there be for a University which, in every facet of its teachings, now incorporates a wider understanding of our countryside?

Our facilities:Here at the RAU, we know IT is an integral part of our students’ lives, both for learning and research, and for relaxing and communicating with family and friends. All our students can bring their own laptops, tablets and smartphones and use our network for academic purposes and for personal internet access. Free copies of Microsoft Office 365 are available for downloading onto these devices.
We have a University health centre on campus, run by a local doctor’s surgery specifically for our students.
There is a great range of facilities for sports, both on and off campus, including a gym, an allweather sports pitch and table tennis tables. Many of our sports teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sports League (BUCS).
