History

In 1873, the Massachusetts Normal School opened its doors in response to the Massachusetts Drawing Act, a progressive 1870 mandate requiring all cities in the Commonwealth of over 10,000 residents to include drawing in their public school curricula (“normal schools” were the precursors to teachers’ colleges).

Student services

The ARC helps students to identify their strengths, manage their vulnerabilities, formulate academic study plans, and develop the skills in literacy, self-advocacy, technology, and communication necessary their artistic vision. Consultations are also available to faculty and staff working directly with, or on behalf of, MassArt students.  

Housing services

There's always something new to explore at MassArt. Whether you're attending a reception for a new student exhibition, listening to a world-renowned visiting artist, or collaborating on an interdisciplinary project with your friends, you'll always unearth something exciting.  

Library services

The library is located on the 12th and 13th floors of the Tower building at 621 Huntington Avenue. The library is open to the general public, year-round from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. 

Campus life

Learning at MassArt occurs both inside and outside the classroom, and residence life is a vital part of the collegiate experience.The Housing and Residence Life staff at MassArt understand that the students’ experience while living on campus is at the center of their daily lives. The staff strives to create a sense of community defined by cooperation, commitment to welfare of the group, and a sense of responsibility to self and others. Students are encouraged to meet new people and make new connections, and contribute to the residential experience by participating in activities and developing new life skills associated with community living.  

Sports facilities

MassArt provides a variety of athletics including intramurals and varsity, recreation and wellness programs for all students, faculty and staff to engage in recreational pursuits that provides opportunities for personal growth and development in partnership with Colleges of the Fenway (COF) and its member institutions. 

Student clubs

Student Government Association (SGA) exists to encourage responsible Student Activism through Self-Governance. As the Representative unit of the Student body, we secure and defend our right to full participation in the process of decision making which affects our education and educational environment. All MassArt students are members of our organization – come to a meeting and make a difference.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. MassArt is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
