Texas A&M University at Galveston is the source for all things “ocean-oriented” at Texas A&M University. TAMUG offers a unique blend of marine and maritime programs, including majors in science, business, engineering, liberal arts, and transportation.

History

1931

Statute passed by Texas state Legislature that “interested citizens” could establish “in one of the harbors of the State of Texas a Nautical School…”

1952

The Marine Laboratory established.                

1957

Marine Laboratory of the oceanography department of Texas A&M College authorized to move to a surplus building on Fort Crockett.

Education

TAMUG offers ocean-oriented, four-year courses with excellence in business, oceanographic and physical sciences, biological sciences, engineering and transportation and liberal arts. Degrees are awarded from Texas A&M University. Computer science and technical writing courses are taught across curricula, regardless of a student’s major field.

Research

 There are over 50 TAMUG faculty actively participating in extramural research encompassing the areas of marine biology, marine sciences, marine environmental and conservation studies, marine/maritime engineering, computational chemistry/biochemistry.

Career Services can offer a variety of services for students in every stage of the career planning process, from your freshman year through graduation.

 These services include:

Student services

The Division of Student Affairs, Suite 101 in the Seibel Student Services Center, is responsible for the social, moral, and intellectual development of TAMUG students through their involvement in Student Organizations, leadership activities, Recreational Sports, and other co-curricular and extracurricular activities.  Student Affairs also oversees Housing, Judicial Services, Multicultural Services, Counseling & Career Services, and the Residence Life programs as well as advises student organizations about program planning, university rules, risk management and the function of organizations to students throughout their college career. 

Housing services

The Office of Residence Life is located in Pacific Hall in suite 5110B.

These two residence halls opened Fall 2012 and can house 294 students in each hall.  These buildings feature interior hallways and several study and social spaces on every floor. Each building has a large central lobby including a kitchenette (stove, oven, sink) for student use. The buildings enclose a center outdoor area perfect for socializing, impromptu Frisbee, or outdoor movies. Each suite will house four students, with two students in a room. Each suite will have a small private study area for the suitemates to share, located outside bedrooms. Bathrooms will also be located outside of student rooms, and shared by the suite.

Library services

The Jack K. Williams Library supports the mission of Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) by providing access to services and collections in various formats to meet the curriculum, research, professional, intellectual, creative and personal needs of the TAMUG community and other information seekers.

ICT services

Information Services at Texas A&M Galveston provides support to Students, Staff and Faculty. This includes support for:

Medical services

Student Health Fees provide coverage only for the office visit. Students will not be billed for the clinic visit. However, any charges incurred during visit (X-rays, lab work, immunizations, prescriptions, etc) will be billed to the student or student's insurance if provided to UTMB Family Medicine clinic staff, Texas A&M University at Galveston will not be responsible for any extra charges. 

Campus life

The island location of the campus on Galveston Bay and near the open ocean is in symmetry with the ocean-oriented academic programs offered at TAMUG. The Mitchell Campus, situated on the Galveston harbor and close to the confluence of the Galveston and Houston ship channels, has immediate access to the ocean and to estuarine areas including Galveston Bay. The Port of Galveston and Port of Houston are nearby, as are many Gulf Coast industries.

Sports facilities

The Department of Recreational Sports features four programmatic areas: Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Outdoor Program, & Aquatics.
