University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco is redefining legal education through our experiential, interdisciplinary, and international approach to the law. History

UC Hastings was founded in 1878 as the law department of the University of California and, as such, was the first UC law school and the first law school in California.In the years following World War II, the College was known for its Sixty-Five Club, a group of eminent scholars and jurists who provided Hastings with one of the most distinguished faculties of any American law school. 

Education

UC Hastings offers seven subject area concentrations, fourteen clinics and a wide variety of externship programs, including one of the most extensive judicial externship programs in the country; study abroad programs with sixteen law schools in Asia, Europe, and the Americas; four nationally recognized research and advocacy centers focusing on local government law, negotiations and dispute resolution, worklife law, and gender and refugee studies; opportunities to work on nine student-edited scholarly journals or on one of our award-winning skills teams, including trial advocacy, negotiation and mediation, and one of the very best moot court programs in the country.

Public Law Research Institute

Founded by Professor Julian Levi at Hastings College of the Law in 1983, the Public Law Research Institute (PLRI) analyzes legal issues that currently confront California's state and local governments, at the request of various state and local governmental offices, including the California Senate Office of Research and the Research Bureau of the California State Library. The range of topics varies from year to year, and is as broad as the spectrum of issues state and local governments confront.

Student services

In the Office of Student Services, like the Academic Dean’s Office, we’re here to support the whole you - academically, professionally, and personally. We primarily focus on supporting you in your activities and endeavors outside of the classroom. This includes academic planning, bar admissions planning, registering and collaborating with all 60+ student organizations and student government on campus, and hosting large academic events such as orientation and commencement, just-for-fun events like ice cream socials, and wellness activities like free yoga 5 days a week.

Housing services

Housing Services aims to provide a residential environment for UC Hastings students that is safe, secure, well-maintained, and affordable; and which promotes academic success builds lasting relationships, and fosters a spirit of cooperation and camaraderie among our diverse and multi-cultural student population.

Situated in the heart of San Francisco’s Civic Center, UC Hastings offers access to every level of the judiciary, with the exception of the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, many of the city’s top attractions are just blocks away.

Library services

The UC Hastings Law Library, located on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of Mary Kay Kane Hall, supports the research and educational endeavors of the students and faculty of the UC Hastings College of the Law. The Library's holdings of over 650,000 volumes include an extensive collection of federal, international, and California documents.

ICT services

The Wireless Network extends to most student study areas. Any student with a notebook computer with 802.11b or 802.11g Wireless Networking (either through a plug-in card, or built-in) can connect to the Hastings network and get access to email and the Internet. 802.11N has been installed in all classrooms on campus.

Medical services

All students, whether they have UC Hastings insurance or private insurance, may make full use of the student health services clinic. The staff can answer your Hastings student insurance questions and help with insurance processing.

There is no charge for care at Student Health Services clinic. It is supported by the fees you pay each semester.

Campus life

UC Hastings is steps away from every manner of transportation, from streetcars and cable cars, to ferries and BART, San Francisco's subway. Our urban campus is comprised of three buildings containing classrooms, offices, our award-winning library, conference space, student apartments, and numerous amenities, such as the Law Café, the Skyroom, several lounges and study spaces, a basketball court and fitness center.

Sports facilities

There are many great opportunities for UC Hastings students to participate in sports both on and off campus. There are numerous soccer, softball, and volleyball leagues, as well as various tennis clubs and public golf courses in San Francisco. Many UC Hastings students exercise along the Embarcadero, on the Marina Green, Crissy Field in the Presidio, or even across the Golden Gate Bridge. Exercising outdoors is also made enjoyable by the fact that the Bay Area weather is comfortable year-round.
