Mitchell Hamline School of Law provides a legal education grounded in legal theory and distinguished by exceptional practical legal training. A forward-thinking, independent law school with a history dating back more than 100 years, we have continually shaped legal education to be relevant to our students, their future clients, and the legal profession.

History

Mitchell Hamline traces its roots back to 1900, when five notable St. Paul lawyers had an entirely new idea for legal education. They founded a night law school for people who, because they were earning a living and supporting a family, needed an alternative to daytime law school.

Student services

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion works with the Mitchell Hamline administration, faculty, and staff to create an environment where students feel comfortable expressing their racial, ethnic, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, and all other dimensions of their social and cultural identity. We offer a number of programs and services that help students build a vibrant learning community, as well as explore the law from different perspectives.

Housing services

Although Mitchell Hamline does not have campus housing, each month, persons in the Twin Cities (and usually in the immediate neighborhoods surrounding Mitchell Hamline) rent their privately-owned properties—including apartments, houses, and duplexes.

Library services

Our library is a great place for research, collaboration with fellow students, or quiet study. Open late every day, it’s your place to use research tools such as Bloomberg Law, LexisNexis, Westlaw, and our library’s own research guides. Our reference librarians are available to help you develop research plans and find and resources. They’re available to chat in person or online.

ICT services

Our model courtroom/classroom design gives students an authentic courtroom experience. They’re highly versatile, filled with adaptable technology and modular furniture that allows for a number of courtroom and classroom setups.

Campus life

Mitchell Hamline’s iconic building and spacious grounds are in the heart of St. Paul’s historic Summit Avenue. We’re just blocks from the Minnesota Governor’s mansion, shops, restaurants, and pubs. We’re only a short drive, bus, or train ride away from downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis. And the Twin Cities are consistently ranked as one of the most bike-friendly areas in the country.

Sports facilities

The Sports and Entertainment Law Society provides students with several opportunities throughout each school year to expose themselves to various legal and non-legal positions that are available within this area of law.  Every year, the officers organize several events, covering both sports representation and compliance and several areas within Entertainment law including film and television production, artist representation, and numerous topics within music.
