History

Drury was founded in 1873 to offer an environment of strong academic discourse and intellectual achievement. Its founders, Congregationalist home missionaries, felt the need for an academically strong liberal arts college in Southwest Missouri. Drury College became Drury University on January 1, 2000, reflecting its growing role in higher education.

Education

Drury University is an institution of higher education offering masters, baccalaureate and associate degrees. The university enrollment is approximately 4,000 students. Programs are characterized by a focus on preparing students for satisfying and successful lives and careers. The programs prepare students for professional careers through careful attention to a liberal arts education with professional preparation. Drury is distinctive in its attention to the comprehensive preparation of graduates competent to assume leading roles in their professions and in their communities.

Research

Many academic departments offer special research or investigative projects beyond the regular catalog offering. Significant responsibility lies with the student to work independently to develop a proposal for study that must be approved by a faculty mentor and the appropriate department chair. The faculty member will provide counsel through the study and will evaluate the student’s performance.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible.

Housing services

Drury's apartment-style housing combines the ultimate in privacy with community living in Springfield's historic Midtown area. Apartments and houses offer students an independent living environment with all the services, conveniences and security of residence hall living. All units are within walking distance of the academic buildings. The majority of our freshmen and sophomores live in one of three residence halls: Smith, Sunderland, and Wallace. Resident Assistants are undergraduate students who organize group events where attendance and participation in impromptu pizza parties, late-night chats and study sessions can lead to strong friendships.

Library services

The Education Curriculum collection has been developed to support the School of Education & Child Development undergraduate and graduate students. The collection contains textbooks, workbooks and supplemental materials.Journals, magazines, and newspapers are all known as “periodicals” because they publish new issues on a periodic basis.

ICT services

Technology Services maintains the network, servers, computers, telephones and most software on Drury campuses. The Technology Services Help Desk coordinates requests for service in these areas.

Medical services

Students come to the Counseling Services office wanting to feel better about themselves and others. The counselors are trained to assist people with personal growth, awareness of self and environment, and developing the skills students need to cope with problem situations.
