History
Hunan University, originating from Yuelu Academy founded in 976 A.D. during the Northern Song Dynasty, is the oldest institution in Chinese history, earning it the name "One-Thousand-Year-Old Institution". With 1030 year old history it has transformed from an ordinary ancient academy to a famous modern institute.
Education
Carrying forward the celebrated traditions of quality education and personnel cultivation, HNU continues to focus on the essence of its motto "Seeking Truth from Facts; Daring to be Pioneers" and the style of "Be Profound, Intelligent, Diligent and Dedicated in the Pursuit of Knowledge". It has adopted distinctive teaching style featuring "solid foundation, active thinking, strong adaptability, and good comprehensive quality". The university has fostered numerous senior professionals.
Career
Many of its graduates have become academic experts, entrepreneurs and high ranking officials in government organs and private sectors, while 39 faculty and alumni members have been elected as members of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

University Ranking
Library services
At present Hunan University Library possesses 3 library buildings and 29 college/department reference rooms, with a total area of over 35,000 square meters and 3,000 seats in the reading rooms. Library buildings are made up of Branch Library for Special Collections (built in 1947 and enlarged in 1951), Central Library (built in 1979), and Branch Library in North Campus.
