Good
It’s a wonderful university. As someone who has been an undergrad, post grad, and staff member at different stages, I might be a little biased. The campus is beautiful and has a good blend of classic old architecture and new. There are thriving societies for everything you could imagine and if you can’t find the right one it’s very easy to create it. In the same vein, there are two distinct student unions with their own subcultures and facilities - they run gigs, comedy nights, charity events, club nights, ceilidhs, record & book sales etc. You can learn muay thai or chill out with yoga at the gym, and swim a few laps or hop in the sauna afterward. If you find you have an hour free at lunch, you might visit the main canteen to see whats on the food rotation (chicken katsu, stroganoff, lasagna… always some good options) or even drift down to the cafe at the crypt, a nice little community run hideout with cheap food & a piano. The wider area of the west end is just beautiful and you’re never too far from the city centre. As for the teaching quality, you get out what you put in (same as everywhere). If you put in the work, there is every resource available to accelerate and support your learning. I was a lazy undergrad and still managed to escape with a degree and a broad, general understanding of mechanical engineering. As a masters student with a stronger work ethic, the quality of teaching has really opened up. Teachers are responsive, the library is an incredible resource for both physical and electronic content, and once the campus is open again the numerous labs and workshops will be a great place to add a practical dimension to study. On that note, I would say that the uni puts a greater emphasis on academic principles than practical ones (at least for mechanical engineering). Certain courses could certainly benefit from more & better labs; an ounce of practical is after all worth a ton of theory. The university also takes the mental health of its students very seriously and possesses a variety of resources to support you when needed.
