History
Southern Medical University (SMU), the former First Military Medical University, was founded in October 1951 and notarized as one of the premier medical universities in 1978.

SMU now has 99 master¡ˉs programs, 10 primary disciplines with 75 doctoral programs authorized to confer doctor¡ˉs degree, and 7 post-doctoral mobile research centers.

Best Global Universities Rankings by U.S. News & World Report presents all the top universities from the U.S. and 60 other countries around the world. They measure the rate of students going to their second year of studies, as well as the rate of students who graduate. It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Housing services
The main campus of Southern Medical University provides a building to accommodate the international students. This dormitory is well equipped including air conditioners, internet services and hot water supply system. Therefore it is surely to provide clean living, and ideal learning environment for its students. On the Shunde campus of Southern Medical University, international students live with the Chinese students in the dormitories and their daily needs are also well satisfied.
Campus life
SMU comprises 2 campuses covering an area of 176 hectare in total. Its main campus is located in the Baiyun District, Guangzhou City, and its new campus in Shunde District, Foshan City. SMU has 17 schools, 6 affiliated hospitals, 47 non-directly affiliated hospitals.
SMU currently has 19,540 on-campus students, including 1,263 doctorate candidates, 2,992 master degree candidates, 13,543 undergraduate students, 832 college students(3ys) and 910 international students as well. Apart from that, there are over 19,000 off-campus students attending SMU courses via correspondence and online classroom.
Student clubs
Southern Medical University Student Union, founded on December 25, 2005, is under the leadership of the Party, self-management, self-service, under the guidance of the school the student mass organizations of self education, the presidium of the directly affiliated institutions of the Guangdong Students’ Federation.
