Education

It is known around the world for providing highly employable graduates, who have a distinctive, strong professional orientation. We aim to strengthen our graduates' attributes and skills further, through:

  • Enhanced approaches to teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Further development of facilities and support for the student learning and living experience; and
  • A continually updated, relevant, broad curriculum.

Research

Research at Heriot-Watt spans the fundamental to the applied, through an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation and enterprise. It aims to:

  • Promote new interdisciplinary fields of research, emphasising economic and societal benefit in order to generate high impact outputs and attract significant research funding to increase critical mass;
  • Develop further strategic collaborations through national and international academic and industrial research alliances;
  • Take advantage of our international campuses and worldwide learning partnerships to extend research opportunities;

Career

The Careers Advisory Service aims to help students identify their career goals and develop the skills required to gain employment.  We provide careers information on a range of topics including:

  • applications
  • CVs
  • interview techniques
  • aptitude tests
  • internships
  • graduate occupations

We identify and secure student internships which are compulsory for certain programmes while optional for others.  Careers events will be organised during the academic year to introduce students to employers and provide networking and employment opportunities.

Services

Student services

The Student Service Centre provides the administrative support for the registry functions and academic programmes.  Staff provide guidance on a range of academic matters to ensure that students receive the right information. Main responsibilities include:

  • fee collections
  • timetables and room bookings
  • appeals
  • clarification on policies and procedures
  • graduations

Housing services

  • Living on the beautiful Edinburgh Campus is a great way to meet others from all over the world and make lifelong friends.  Our student accommodation is conveniently located within easy reach of the teaching buildings, sports facilities, catering venues and the Student Union.
  • You will have your own study bedroom, the majority of which have en-suite bathrooms, and access to home comforts – broadband and laundry facilities. Each hall has access to a warden who is there to help you settle in and sort out any problems you might encounter.  There is also 24 hour security on the campus.

Library services

The two-storey library has been planned to cater for the different learning styles and preferences of students.  Quiet study rooms have been provided for individual study while group study and discussion areas are provided for collaborative learning.

ICT services

Students are supported in their learning with IT facilities including industry relevant software and the virtual learning environment (VLE).  The VLE is a web-based integrated teaching and learning tool.  

Medical services

International Students are covered under an insurance provider through EMGS. Students receive this information during the orientation. A list of hospitals and clinics that accepts your insurance cards will be forwarded to you at the beginning of the first semester.

Sports facilities

  • Heriot-Watt University's Sports Union is a student-led organisation that offers our students the perfect opportunity to join a club, receive coaching and compete in your chosen sport at higher education level.
  • Sports clubs are run by students, for students and are an excellent way to get involved in something active at university. The Union regularly competes at national and international levels in a range of sports, including archery, fencing, mountaineering, squash and volleyball.

Student clubs

  • University is the time to find a hobby: with flexible working hours, some say you won't find another chance like it. Societies are a great way to meet new people and make friends with other students from around the world.
  • The Heriot-Watt University Student Union is very active and plays a key role in bringing students together through a wide range of student-run clubs and societies. From the Computer Games Society to the Dance Club, we're sure you'll find something that interests you!
