The creation of the University of Oviedo and the College of Orphan Girls Recoletas was possible thanks to the will of Fernando de Valdés, archbishop of Seville, Inquisitor General and president of the Council of Castile, in accordance with his will and codicils issued in 1566 and 1568 .
Worthy of note is the participation of nearly 200 companies in the teaching and student placements in academic-career-oriented Master's degree programmes. It coordinates three Erasmus Mundus Master's programmes and offers students bilingual studies, dual degrees with foreign universities, and double degrees via which young people obtain two degrees.

The University of Oviedo has a teaching and research staff (TRS) of more than 2,000 people in 38 departments who come together in research groups to carry out this activity.
The University is home to a group of about 350 young researchers, who join research groups via different calls for grants and programmes to support research training and teaching, at both a post-graduate and post-doctoral level. There are also about 400 people doing research work in the context of research projects and publicly or privately funded contracts.
The University of Oviedo provides supports to its students through a variety of advice and career counselling resources.
