UAM is a Spanish public university established in 1968, along with the autonomous universities of Barcelona and Bilbao (now University of the Basque Country) during one of Spain's most ambitious educational reforms, which took place during the late 1960s and the early 1970s.
Since 1971, the university's main campus has been located in Cantoblanco, a rural area in the northern outskirts of Madrid. Despite being part of the municipality of Madrid, the campus is nearer the towns of Alcobendas and Tres Cantos.
The mission of the Office of Studies and Institutional Evaluation (GEEI) consists in carrying out the evaluation and quality control activities entrusted to it by the governing team, focusing mainly on the quality of teaching and the activity of the teaching staff, as well as on conventional activities in support of teaching such as automated marking of examinations.
The UAM offers university housing through the Colegio Mayor Juan Luis Vives and the Residencia Universitaria Erasmo on campus.
The Library supports research, teaching and study, providing access to the necessary information resources from this university or elsewhere. The different service points serve the entire University community and are available in eight faculty or school libraries. There are also specialised documentation centres.
The university was established in 1968. It is accredited by Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, España.
