The DPhil (PhD) in International Affairs programme is offered by International Business School and leads to the degree conferred by our British partner, The University of Buckingham. The programme requires an original contribution to the body of knowledge in a particular academic or professional discipline.

About

The DPhil (PhD) in International Affairs programme offered by International Business School is an advanced research degree, which MPhil students who have completed their first annual review to the required standard may join. The programme is aimed at policy-makers and experts for international affairs to address critical issues centred on diplomacy, foreign policy, and international relations. The emphasis of our doctoral programmes is on independent research and one-on-one consultations.

DPhil students undertake supervised but independent research, at the end of which they submit a thesis of not more than 100,000 words embodying the results of that research. This thesis must demonstrate familiarity with, and an understanding of the subject, its principal sources and authorities. It should display critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the judgements of others.  A DPhil thesis must embody an original contribution to the knowledge of business and management either by the discovery of new knowledge, or by the exercise of a new and independent critical approach.

Preference areas of the DPhil thesis:

  • General management
  • Marketing
  • Finance, corporate banking, monetary policy
  • Development studies
  • Regional development
  • International Affairs, with particular regard to European and transatlantic affairs and CIS countries
  • History of Arts and Visual Culture
