Overview
The Architecture and Design Programme at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design brings together research approaches from the arts, humanities, social sciences, and engineering to the study of Architecture and Design.
Features
- The academic doctoral thesis consists of original research, or other advanced scholarship, culminating with a thesis that embodies the results of original investigations and analyses of such quality as to merit publication, meeting the standards of reputable scholarly publications.
- The submitted work must constitute a substantial contribution to the knowledge in the candidate’s field of research.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- PhD Candidates receive close follow-up and academic supervision, but must take responsibility for planning and carrying out the individual thesis work.
- After completion of the educational component and submission of the academic doctoral thesis, the PhD is examined by a doctoral committee of three peers.
- If the committee approves the thesis, the candidate must give a trial lecture and defend the thesis publicly in an open discussion with the members of the doctoral committee.

General requirements
- To be admitted to AHOs PhD programme, the applicant must document a completed master degree or equivalent to it. Previous experience from research or through post-graduate master education will be an advantage.
- AHO only accept fully financed external PhD candidates. Financing for three year of full time studies must be documented. AHO does not accept student’s financed out of one’s own capital, the financing must be provided by external sources as Universities or University colleges, the Norwegian Research Council or businesses.
- Candidates financed through AHO’s own PhD positions or by external financed AHO projects are employed by the school and receive a monthly salary during the PhD education period. Students employed by other universities or university colleges can also apply to be admitted to the PhD programme.
