Overview
Specific requirements for required course work are:
- Students entering with an MS degree will be required to take a minimum of 12 hours of graduate course work, exclusive of AE 601, dissertation credit or seminar courses.
- Students entering with a BS degree will be required to take a minimum of 42 hours of graduate course work, exclusive of AE 601, dissertation credit or seminar courses.
Energy Science and Engineering Concentration
This concentration is offered in collaboration with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (CIRE). The CIRE is a joint effort between the College of Engineering, other University of Tennessee colleges, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The students who wish to pursue this concentration will normally have completed 6 Core credit hours, 3 credit hours of Knowledge Breadth, and 6 credit hours of Knowledge Specialization coursework (minimum 15 hours) specified under the Energy Science and Engineering major.
The Aerospace Engineering program is offered by the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
Programme Structure
Additional requirements for all students include the following:
- Registration and participation in the graduate seminar in the major program.
- Meet all departmental examination requirements, which include passing a written and oral comprehensive examination.
- Presentation of a dissertation proposal to the student’s advisory committee and approval of that proposal by that committee.
- Successful defense of the dissertation.

- International students must have at least a “B” average in undergraduate courses from a non-U.S. institute.
- Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores. To be fully admitted, applicants must submit a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL; 80 on the TOEFL iBT or 6.5 on the IELTS.
