The research work of the Mathematics team of the University of Chester has been widely recognised. In the UK-wide Research Assessment Exercise, work of international excellence formed a significant part of the activity under review.

Grant awards to members of the Department’s staff included three grants from the Leverhulme Trust as well as grants from the British Council, the Royal Society and other leading funding agencies.

Programme Structure

Areas of research include:

Group theory, algebra and combinatorics. Particularly groups acting on various geometric, combinatorial and algebraic objects.

Mathematical logic and set theory. In particular, the comparison of foundational theories and the study of the structure of their models.

Numerical methods for fractional ordinary (partial) differential equations in both the deterministic and stochastic case, finite element methods, internal and boundary controls for the parabolic equation, and numerical methods for (stochastic) integral equations.

Machine Learning and Deep Neural Networks for solving differential equations.

To be eligible to apply for PhD programmes, applicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree in a discipline appropriate to their intended area of research.

Substantial prior research experience may, in some instances, be acceptable in place of a first degree qualification.
