Areas of research include:- French and Francophone Studies
The French team has research specialisms across Francophone Area Studies, and has developed particular strengths in French and francophone literatures, popular cultures, postcolonial movements and identity politics.
- Hispanic and Iberian Studies
In addition to providing research supervision across a range of historical, political and cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world, staff in the Spanish and Hispano-American team offer the research students particular expertise in Cuban studies based on their own fieldwork and academic research conducted in the Hispanic Caribbean.
- German Studies and Chinese Studies
Research in German encompasses memory studies, post reunification cultural politics, oral history and criminality in East Germany.

General requirements
- To be eligible to apply for PhD programmes, applicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least an upper second class honours degree in a discipline appropriate to their intended area of research.
- Substantial prior research experience may, in some instances, be acceptable in place of a first degree qualification.
- A completed application, two references (in most cases the references shall come from independent academic referees, i.e. they are not normally provided by a prospective supervisor), an up-to-date CV and copies of appropriate certificates or transcripts must be uploaded to the application in order to be considered.
