Overview

This Creative Writing programme offered by Durham University welcomes projects across a broad range of creative writing forms, including poetry, short stories, innovative fiction, narrative non-fiction, memoir and life-writing, and hybrid genres such as the lyric essay, autofiction, and conceptual poetry. Research interests within the department encompass nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century writing from English-language traditions and literature in English-language translation. Applicants are normally expected to identify an appropriate supervisor before applying.

Key Facts

Students undertake a programme combining a creative project and a literary-critical dissertation, typically weighted 50:50, although alternative balances may be approved where appropriate. The creative and critical components are developed alongside one another and are expected to form a coherent body of work. The literary-critical dissertation may focus on writers, literature, or theoretical writing, while the final submission is defended through a viva examination.
