Overview

This Anthropology programme offered by Durham University enables students to develop and deliver an original research project under the supervision of at least two academic staff members. Researchers receive close mentorship, tailored training, and become part of a research group from the beginning of their studies, participating in regular events, workshops, and discussions. Students may follow either the Sociocultural Anthropology pathway or the Biological Anthropology pathway, with both leading to a thesis.

The first year includes a biweekly research seminar, the option to audit taught postgraduate modules, and submission of a 7,000-word progression script assessed through a viva. Successful completion allows progression to fieldwork or data collection in the second year, followed by analysis and writing in the final year. A staff-led writing seminar and career development workshops support thesis completion and future planning. Part-time study and remote supervision may also be available.
