Overview
Our International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) PhD researchers work on topics in the field of global development and social justice based on a strong theoretical footing and using cutting-edge qualitative and quantitative methods.
Aims
The ISS’s aim is to provide a creative and lively environment for critically minded and independent scholars to contribute to positive social change, as well as global justice and equity.
Many of our PhD candidates at Erasmus University Rotterdam are experienced professionals with a track record in development, activism, academia and/or public service, enriching the academic exchange with their experiences and views.

General requirements
- Masters degree in one of the social sciences - you must must have obtained at least ‘very good’, class 2.1, a GPA of 3.00 or equivalent, but preferably a first class degree, excellent or GPA of 3.50.
Submit the required documents:
- Copy of Academic Degree(s) / Diploma(s) MA degree
- Certified Copy of Academic Transcript(s)
- Your research proposal (starting with a short motivation)
- Your Master thesis (if available)
- Your c.v./resume
- Three references testifying to your ability to undertake PhD research (and, if applicable, to your relevant professional experience). One of these references must be a representative from your Masters programme.
