About the programme
Media and Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary subject that draws on theory and method of the social sciences and humanities. The subject is characterised by its global orientation and has two research profiles:
- Communication, Culture, and Identity
- Media, Democracy, and Citizenship.
Doctoral students quickly become acquainted with the core of the academic conversation on current media and communication issues through participation in research seminars. The department cooperates with other subjects at and outside of Karlstad University regarding doctoral courses and supervision.

Research in this area focuses on questions such as:
- What role is played by the media in our lives?
- Why does media content look the way it does?
- How do we use the media – in our private lives and at work?
- And how do the media actually influence our view of the world and of ourselves?
