Overview
Key facts
The diversity of individual profiles and the mainstreaming of subjects that characterizes research in civil engineering recommends a flexible practice in the definition of both project and programme. It is important to create working conditions that enhance training with strong national and international forms of cooperation, in research institutions or in business environments.
Objectives
The aim of the Civil Engineering programme from Instituto Superior Técnico is to provide and create specialized knowledge in emerging scientific, technical and or technological areas.
Its purpose is to provide the qualification necessary to carry out scientific research and independent technological development activities, of internationally renowned quality, in higher education institutions, research laboratories and specialized services of the public administration and of the business sector.
Career
A PhD is usually associated with professional careers in higher education institutions and in research laboratories.
These are the options that still motivate most doctoral students. However, it should be recognised that it was advanced training that potentiated the professional competitiveness of the doctorate holders who chose different branches of activity, namely in companies.
