The main areas of the Physics   PhD Program from Instituto Superior Técnico are:

  • Particle and High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology;
  • Condensed Matter Physics, Nanotechnology, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics;
  • Plasmas Physics, Nuclear Fusion, Photonics and Intense Lasers.

The PhD Program in Physics together with the PhD Program in Technological Physics Engineering (see the specific web page for this latter) integrate the 3rd  study cycle of higher education courses that result from the Bologna Agreement. 

They complement the basic formation in physics of the 1st and 2nd  cycles at IST embodied in the Integrated Master Degree in Technological Physics Engineering.


The PhD Program in Physics is designed to provide advanced knowledge and research capabilities in at least one of the scientific areas in which the Physics Department is organized. It basically aims at preparing researchers for autonomous research and development activities in the broad domain of Physics in order to become research scholars in an academic or industrial environment.


High qualification researchers to work in national and international scientific centres and laboratories public or private. Researchers able to work in the great European institutions of research and technological development: European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN); European Southern Observator (ESO); European Space Agency (ESA); Joint European Torus (JET); as well as in the international project ITER created to design and build an experimental fusion reactor. The PhDs in Physics can also follow an academic career as professors at University or at any other School of high education (polytechnical level).
